Last year’s inaugural Boot Walk to End Cancer benefiting The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center was a boot stomping good time & a rousing success so they’re bringing it back this year! AND, I’m a co-captain of the Stomp Out Stage IV Breast Cancer team! I’m so excited to be able to participate again this year and to help raise awareness and funds for the Advanced Breast Cancer Program at MD Anderson!
OK here are the deets..
WHEN: Saturday, November 11, 2017, 1 PM
WHERE: MD Anderson Cancer Center
WHAT’S GOING DOWN? Cancer-fighters (patients, physicians, researchers, nurses, families & friends – because, let’s face it, we are ALL in the fight against cancer!) will put on their boots & walk 1.2 miles together to take a stand against cancer! At the starting line last year, Dad asked, “Is this going to be a race?” I laughed and reminded him there were a-whole-lotta cancer patients participating, so no, IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A RACE!
WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO? Join the team, raise money & walk with us! Or donate to my fundraising efforts.
HOW DO I JOIN THE TEAM? Click here to join the Stomp Out Stage IV Breast Cancer Team
I DON’T THINK I CAN PARTICIPATE THAT DAY, BUT I’LL DONATE TO YOUR EFFORTS. Well, THANK YOU! You can click here to donate to my fundraising page!
HOW MUCH SHOULD I GIVE? We’ll take ALL of the money! 😉 OK, seriously, I know there are so many worthy causes and I’m so thankful for all of the love, support and prayers you wonderful people have blessed me with over my life (not just since my stinkin’ metastatic breast cancer diagnosis). If you can spare a few dollars, that’s fantastic! If this is not the year for you to donate, that’s just fine, too. I promise I’ll keep loving you & knowing that you love me no matter what your level of Boot Walk participation!
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? (Provided that we reach the $25,000 fundraising threshold,) the funds our Stomp Out Stage IV Breast Cancer team raises will be specifically directed to the Advanced Breast Cancer Program (ABC) at MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). MD Anderson’s Advanced Breast Cancer Program is a multi-department effort designed to increase the median survival time for patients with advanced breast cancer from 3 years to 10 years, improve the quality of life of patients with stage IV breast cancer, and find a cure for stage IV breast cancer.
Funds that were raised last year are already being put to work to improve the care of patients in our daily struggle with metastatic breast cancer, increase our access to and knowledge of clinical trials, and provide much needed funding toward the identification of the causes and treatment of metastatic disease. In fact, the ABC program has a NEW dedicated clinical trial navigator who is notified each time a metastatic breast cancer patient goes in for a “restaging” scan and provides the patient’s oncologist with a list of and information about specific clinical trials that would best suit the patient given her specific tumor profile and the location of metastatic disease in her body. I am so excited about this initiative and know that as it grows it will have a tremendous impact on the lives of those affected by advanced breast cancer.
ARE YOU GOING TO BE ASKING US FOR MONEY EVERY YEAR? Yeah. Sure. You betcha. Honestly, I hate it. However, I truly believe the Advanced Breast Cancer program at MD Anderson is my very best shot at becoming an “extraordinary survivor” who surpasses the median 3 year survival rate. So yep, I’m going to be campaigning for this program and MD Anderson as long as I’m alive, and in fact, even after I’m gone, you can bet that “in lieu of flowers” request is going to be directed towards the ABC program at MDACC. That’s how much I believe in this program and how much hope I have for what can come out of it! Not just for me, but so that someday no other family will have to face the prospect of losing a loved one to breast cancer.
WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT THE ADVANCED BREAST CANCER PROGRAM? Well, fancy you should ask that! There’s a new website – Click here to visit the site.
Also, we have begun hosting a quarterly “town-hall” meeting at MD Anderson Cancer Center to talk about the Advanced Breast Cancer Program! Join us to discuss patients’ and faculty members’ vision for the Program, learn about the progress that has been made to date, ask questions and help inform the future of the Advanced Breast Cancer Program. I will post about the next one before we meet late this summer.
